Why Should I Trust These Gloves?
Working with temperatures this low can cause serious damage to your hands and arms, so you'll want to know that you can trust what these gloves say. In order to do that, these gloves have been tested to EN standards EN 388 and EN 511, measuring their resistance to mechanical threats and the cold. They achieved the following scores:
EN 388
Hazard | Level of Resistance |
Abrasion Resistance | Level 2 |
Cut Resistance | N/A |
Tear Resistance | Level 2 |
Puncture Resistance | N/A |
EN 511
Hazard | Level of Resistance |
Contact Cold | Level 2 |
Convective Cold | Level 2 |
Water Permeability | N/A |
Applications of the Cryogenic Gloves
The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves offer protection against the extreme cold, such as when handling materials with temperatures typically ranging from -120°C to -190°C. As their polyolefin and polyester micro fibre middle liner works with a polyamide coating, the gloves offer effective thermal insulation that doesn't become stiff even when temperatures are extremely low. Applications include:
- Cryogenics
- Freezer work
- Laboratory
Please note that this gloves are designed for handling extremely cold materials. We wouldn't recommend them for simple, cold outdoor work. However, if you work means that you have to handle items that are far below freezing, then these gloves are ideal.
What are the Main Uses of the Frosters Glove Range?
One of the main uses of the Frosters range is protection against spills and splashes of cryogenic materials, including liquid nitrogen. This can occur when pouring or just generally working with ultra cold cryogenic materials. Please note that these gloves are not suitable for immersion in liquid nitrogen.
What Temperatures Can the Mid Length Gloves Protect Against?
These gloves are designed for people who work with materials that are far below freezing. This can include cryogenics, dry ice handling, bottle handling and scientific work where you can expect to experiment with freezing materials. These gloves are suitable for handling solid materials that are typically between -120°C and -190°C, without becoming stiff.
See the Scilabub Gloves in Action
Scilabub Gloves are designed for handling items that have been submerged in liquid nitrogen. This includes in vaccine research, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson was seen visiting a vaccine research facility in September 2020. You can see scientists use Scilabub to protect their hands towards the end of the below video.
How Waterproof Are These Gloves?
The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves feature a polyamide waterproof coating that can resist condensed water on cold surfaces. Please note that this is not completely waterproof, and will only protect your hands when handling damp materials or in a place with cold water vapour.

How Do The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves Work?
The Scilabub Gloves feature an outer layer of woven polyamide, which has a waterproof coating that can resist water vapour and water on damp materials. However, the middle layer features a special polyolefin and polyester micro fibre that has twice the effectiveness of a normal thermal fibre. This then helps to minimise heat transfer without the material being too thick to handle materials.
What Does the Frosters Gloves Fit Feel Like?
The Frosters Gloves feature a cotton liner that is incredibly comfortable to wear. They are mid length and stretch half way up the arms, which can prevent debris from entering the gloves and injuring your skin.
Will I Retain Dexterity in Freezing Conditions?
When handling freezing cold materials you can expect to want to retain dexterity, as this helps to retain grip for yourself while minimising any risk. These gloves are designed to stay flexible even when handling materials that are lower than -100°C, helping to ensure that you can do your job with more productivity and more impact.
