The Spinthariscope is a detection instrument used for observing scintillations produced by radioactive decay.
A radiation cartridge is screwed into the instrument, so that its radiation outlet is directed downwards onto the exposed zinc sulphide screen. It is then possible to look through the eyepiece of the instrument in total darkness and observe the random light flashes that are caused by radioactive decay.
