franck-hertz tube with mercury filling and heating chamber
This product consists of a highly evacuated electron tube containing mercury, along with a heating chamber. It is used for demonstrating the discrete nature, or quantisation, of the energy released by free electrons in collisions with mercury atoms. The Franck-Hertz Tube with Mercury Filling and Heating Chamber can also be used to determine the excitation energy of the mercury resonance line (61S0 – 63P1), which is 4.9 eV.
Featuring lacquered metal housing with two observation windows, an opening with spring clip for thermometer and a thermally insulated carrying handle, this is a top-of-the-range, user-friendly product.
The Franck-Hertz Tube with Mercury Filling is for use in conjunction with other equipment available at Lab World. The Franck-Hertz Experiment is included in most curricula, therefore this product makes a great addition to any classroom lab.
Franck-Hertz Experiment
This well known experiment, first performed by James Franck and Gustav Hertz in 1914, is critically important in terms of demonstrating discrete energy states in atoms. It provides strong confirmation of the idea of quantised atomic energy levels.
This Franck-Hertz Electron Tube is heated in the chamber, generating the necessary mercury vapour pressure to achieve a sufficiently high probability of collisions between electrons and mercury atoms.
The electron tube has a plane parallel lectrode system consisting of an indirectly heated oxide cathode with aperture, a grid and a collecting electrode. The front plate with the printed tube symbol is visible from a distance.
The electric heating chamber features continuous temperature control and digital temperature display, which shows the actual and set-point temperatures. Temperature measurement and control is handled by an integrated microcontroller and a Pt100 thermocouple.
